"David/Dafidi" stageplay at Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, NM in 2004

"DAVID/DAFIDI"

Lensic Performance Art Center

Santa Fe, NM 2004

Bayo Gallery proudly presented the stage play “David /Dafidi” at the magnificent Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, NM in 2004. “David/Dafidi” is a unique artful performance based on the character David in 4 realities- sacred, physical, old, and new - combining David of the Bible with Michaelangelo’s David, the Nigerian Dafidi and a contemporary interpretation of the “David” that all embody. The stage play featured video, dance, music, philosophy and poetic oratory, centering the power of objects. The central object of the production was a 20 ft tall sculptural “Capitol Building” crafted out of dried, spun, and woven tall Iowa grass.

A Multimedia performance of 256 object art on stage

“David/Dafidi” encompassed 256 art objects on stage as object characters interacting with the main character David.  Each object, an original work of art, embodies Olaniyi’s central theme of the power of objects.  These objects include  a unique coral-adorned woodcarving entitled “Black Magic,” a large marble head wrapped in American flags and traditional handwoven fabric, “Frankie,” and the finely crafted and glass seed beads-adorned sculpture “David/Dafidi,” which the stage play was developed around.  Some of these artworks have entered private collections.  Please contact Bayo Park & Galleries for more information regarding acquisition of art objects and collectibles from “David/Dafidi.”
